What an outstanding atmosphere this restaurant provides. Magnificent views of Merewether Beach and the Baths. Glass windows from floor to ceiling allow all diners to appreciate what is at our doorstep in beautiful Newcastle, New South Wales.
I must admit, prior to my visit to the Surfhouse, I had been on quite a strict eating plan of natural foods with very low carbohydrates. To mark a special occasion with wonderful friends, I decided to splurge and have the lobster mornay with the char grilled pork chop for my lunch. When this meal appeared, my friends were all wishing they had indulged as well.
I was presented with the best char grilled pork chop I have ever eaten. Tender, juicy and succulent, a gentle char grill flavour and diced apple and thyme butter to compliment the pork. Accompanying this were a couple of smashed potatoes and a mix of steamed broccolini and spinach. If I thought the meal wasn't heavenly enough, a half lobster mornay was about to take it to the next level.
We were seated right in the southern corner, where the view was spectacular. The glass made the restaurant very hot, making the visit slightly uncomfortable. This aside, I must admit this was one of the most beautiful meals I have ever eaten. At $43.50 it was a tad pricey, but well worth the indulgence.
Alongside me my friends enjoyed crispy skin Tasmanian salmon with green pea salsa verde and mascarpone. My other friend chose the panfried Daintree barramundi with a salad consisting of panzanella salad, olives, roast garlic, pine nuts and sourdough.
Overall, a very enjoyable meal, fantastic views and great wine. I would recommend this restaurant, even though expensive, as well worth the experience.
